{"id":1728,"date":"2018-03-28T00:01:29","date_gmt":"2018-03-27T13:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/?p=1728"},"modified":"2024-08-08T10:27:48","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T00:27:48","slug":"waymo-to-deploy-20000-self-driving-jaguars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/28\/waymo-to-deploy-20000-self-driving-jaguars\/","title":{"rendered":"Waymo To Deploy 20,000 Self-Driving Jaguar&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Waymo has just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/waymo\/meet-our-newest-self-driving-vehicle-the-all-electric-jaguar-i-pace-375cecc70eb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a new partnership<\/a> with Jaguar to build and fit out up to 20,000 I-PACE fully electric cars over the next two years for their Self-Driving ride hail service.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-EBcpIvPWnY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Jaguar I-PACE was recently announced and is aimed squarely at the Tesla S\/X luxury car market as it starts at about $120,000 AUD and goes up from there.<\/p>\n<p>However with Waymo&#8217;s self-driving technology bolted on the public will be able to request the rides via an app and have it drive them around in style starting sometime this year.<\/p>\n<p>As covered a few times before here, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/16\/waymo-kicks-off-era-of-autonomous-cars\/\">Waymo<\/a> is one of, if not the most advanced self driving companies out there. They&#8217;ve been spun out of the original Google X team that has been working on the problem for almost a decade now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Front-1024x545.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"399\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1722\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Front-1024x545.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Front-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Front-768x409.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cars themselves look very fancy as you&#8217;d expect a luxury sedan to be. Jaguar claims the I-PACE is a &#8220;SUV&#8221; however it&#8217;s physical size and weight puts it&#8217;s far closer to Model S territory or a regular sedan. Whichever class you put it in it&#8217;s a fantastic looking and performing car if you&#8217;ve got $120,000+ to drop.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also fantastic to see Waymo expanding out their line-up of vehicles so they&#8217;ll have a variety of cars for each customer type. The I-PACE for the fancy person (eg. someone who&#8217;d normally hail an UberBLACK), their <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/sdc-prod\/v1\/press\/waymo_minivan_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-driving van<\/a> for bigger groups or families and even smaller cars too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Top-1024x543.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"398\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1720\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Top-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Top-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Top-768x407.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The LIDAR and various sensors that make it work also look to be very well hidden and styled away to create a very low key look. To put that into perspective an average Uber trip is around 8 miles or about 12 km&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>If they do manage to hit that 1 million trips per day, likely over a few different cities, that would represent about 4.4 billion km&#8217;s (3 billion miles) of all electric, autonomously driven use per year. I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;ll be the first to take up the far cheaper rates of Waymo&#8217;s driverless technology when it becomes available in their cities.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo hasn&#8217;t announced any prices just yet but with numerous analysts predicting a 10x cost reduction due to lower maintenance costs of EV&#8217;s, no driver to pay, far lower fuel bills and so on it&#8217;s not inconceivable that Waymo could offer a ride in a premium Jaguar I-PACE for cheaper rates than what a plain old UberX currently costs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Side-1024x543.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"398\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1721\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Side-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Side-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.alexshoolman.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Waymo-Jag-Side-768x407.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe this year we&#8217;ll see 16 year olds paying for and using Jag&#8217;s to get around!
