This week we hear from <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultralazyultrarunner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a mother and ultra marathon runner<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultralazyultrarunner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ultralazyultrarunner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/span><\/strong>on how technology improves her game, take it away!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For those of us born in the 70\u2019s and early 80\u2019s we had an analogue childhood that began to turn digital around the end of high school, and because of that it seems my fellow Generation X-ers exist on an extreme spectrum when it comes to adopting today\u2019s technology, depending on when that digital change kicked in.<\/p>\n<p>Me? Well I heart tech and have no wish to go back to \u2018the good old days\u2019. They were huge, ugly, cost upwards of four hundred dollars and didn\u2019t really do that much. And what they did do wasn\u2019t done very well. I did eventually buy a secondhand<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a3\/GarminForerunner305_cropped.jpg\/800px-GarminForerunner305_cropped.jpg\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a3\/GarminForerunner305_cropped.jpg\/800px-GarminForerunner305_cropped.jpg&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHyXU3mEH8QCgesqnADJeL6Q889DQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forerunner 305<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>for about $250 in 2009 which, to its credit, worked for many years, but its interface left a lot to be desired.<\/p>\n<p>Until about 2010 I was still driving around marking run lengths with my car speedometer to get my mileage right, because I found uploading my runs from the Forerunner so time consuming and inaccurate.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suunto.com\/Products\/sports-watches\/Suunto-Ambit2-S\/Suunto-Ambit2-S-Red-HR\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.suunto.com\/Products\/sports-watches\/Suunto-Ambit2-S\/Suunto-Ambit2-S-Red-HR\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHvl4u67WiGiZliRoqmNn6oY2oDrQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suunto Ambit2S<\/a>. I got this beauty in 2012 and right off the bat I loved it.<\/p>\n<p>Waterproof, pretty yet not girly, tough as nails, and with a fantastic interface at<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.movescount.com\/overview\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.movescount.com\/overview&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGLRadmQaPz4fnByd5SahHFCGjIAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Movescount<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that I could then upload to Runkeeper. With it you can run, swim, ski, ride, yoga, golf, whatever the hell you like, including a combination of them all, and the Suunto Ambit lets me track everything.<\/p>\n<p>After about 4 years the HR strap on it started to get a bit dodgy and I happened upon a great deal for a new Suunto, the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suunto.com\/en-AU\/Products\/sports-watches\/Suunto-Ambit3-Sport\/Suunto-Ambit3-Sport-Coral-HR\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.suunto.com\/en-AU\/Products\/sports-watches\/Suunto-Ambit3-Sport\/Suunto-Ambit3-Sport-Coral-HR\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGZnf0vHLjbB_a6Mt89eNOMYNj2oA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suunto Ambit3 Sport with HR<\/a>.<span>&nbsp;<\/span>Not much different to its predecessor except in looks and a more streamlined HR strap, I will be sticking with the Suunto range for the foreseeable future thanks.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Strava_Fitness_Tracking\"><\/span>2. Got a nearby hill you\u2019re fighting to conquer? Make it a \u2018segment\u2019 and watch your progress improve, as well as track other people in your area when they run\/ride it!<\/p>\n<p>Other unique features include the ability to join clubs and create leaderboards. This allows you to compete against each other, and then there&#8217;s the very motivational \u2018kudos\u2019 function. This allows your followers to give you a thumbs up for that early morning run or late night hill reps session. It also lets you comment on another athlete\u2019s workout. There are heaps of elite athletes on there too if you feel like giving<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/athletes\/1712082\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.strava.com\/athletes\/1712082&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHxJ9JCx12IItV4PRHL8qO4I8R_eQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lance Armstrong<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>some encouragement, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Premium_vs_Free\"><\/span>Premium vs Free<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve gone for the Premium version and love the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/premium\/coaching\/fitness-and-freshness\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.strava.com\/premium\/coaching\/fitness-and-freshness&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNElgrNlYwAsYnGAW3qpNyaKIV1MZg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fitness and Freshness<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>tracker, the goal option and their training plans.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are a lot of other sports related apps out there &#8211; Runkeeper, Moveslink, Nike+, MapmyRun &#8211; but none of those have ever actually<span>&nbsp;<\/span><u>made<\/u><span>&nbsp;<\/span>me go out for a run when I didn\u2019t feel like it.<\/p>\n<p>Now maybe you\u2019re not very competitive. Maybe you\u2019ve mastered the elusive art of not caring what your peers think about you. But I haven\u2019t. I<span>&nbsp;<\/span><strong><em>will<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>lace up and get out there if I can move a couple of places up the club leaderboard by smashing out another run before the week ends.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also pushed harder on segments and hill reps trying to beat people I don\u2019t even know in my neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>Silly? Perhaps. But all that extra effort adds up to some actual training gains. So to me it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Online_Shopping\"><\/span>3. It doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re talking groceries, clothes, alcohol, birthday presents, cosmetics or just paying that darn electricity bill, I do a LOT of online spending and it always surprises me to find out how many people still have misgivings about this.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I shouldn\u2019t be too shocked, after all it was only very recently that<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2013-06-04\/more-than-50-per-cent-of-australians-shopping-online\/4731590\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2013-06-04\/more-than-50-per-cent-of-australians-shopping-online\/4731590&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF_2xYSX_jojyp_KJkfqXbraQQo6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the number of Australians shopping online<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>tipped over the 50% mark. As of<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webalive.com.au\/future-of-australian-ecommerce\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.webalive.com.au\/future-of-australian-ecommerce\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919246000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFeOhdSnDledpNON0jAMufoVfFllQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 approximately 65% of Aussies<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>use online shopping though, so that number is going up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I use Ebay and Paypal, book medical appointments and parent teacher interviews, flights and holidays all online and would no sooner spend all day physically wandering around the stores in the city than fly to the moon.<\/p>\n<p>It saves time, gives me the best possible price and can be done from the comfort of my own home. What\u2019s not to love??<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Headphones\"><\/span>4. Headphones<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><\/span>Headphones. I don\u2019t like the over the ear design much (does anyone?) so the unique circular \u2018plate-style\u2019 ear bud of the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbhifi.com.au\/headphones-dj\/headphones\/sol-republic\/sol-republic-relay-sport-in-ear-headphones-black\/995973\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jbhifi.com.au\/headphones-dj\/headphones\/sol-republic\/sol-republic-relay-sport-in-ear-headphones-black\/995973\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1509161919247000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFcn3Dp2WwXkPhPGVuJH2F8Y84Tnw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sol Republic Relay Sport In-Ear Headphones<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>are perfect for both comfort and staying in while jumping up and down.<\/p>\n<p>The sound on these is crystal clear. They also allowing you to hear traffic or other runners\/cyclists passing you. Oh, and they cope with sweat. I\u2019ve had them for 6 months so far and haven\u2019t killed them yet. Some of its suggestions for me really came out of left field. I couldn\u2019t ever trust it to randomly play something I\u2019d probably like.<\/p>\n<p>Not so with Spotify. Plus it learns faster, and better, than Google Play did.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can play new releases immediately. They also offer downloadable tracks so you don\u2019t zap your phone&#8217;s monthly data allowance.
